What Is a Motorized Welding Machine and Who Is It For?
A portable welding generator is a gasoline-powered engine that drives an alternator designed for welding: it provides the steady direct current required by a welding electrode, as well as a 230-volt output for power tools. It is not a generator to which a welder is plugged in; it is a welding machine with its own power source.

Why do you need it?

How to Choose a Motorized Welding Machine: The 6 Key Factors
The specifications for portable welding machines are very similar across brands. Here are the six figures that distinguish a machine that works for you from one that’s either too much or not enough.
Maximum and minimum amperage
The maximum is determined by the thickest electrode (200 A → up to 4 mm). The minimum is just as important, if not more so: 60 A allows for welding thin sheet metal without piercing it. A machine that starts at 90 A is not suitable for auto bodywork or lightweight tubing.
Duty Cycle
The percentage of every 10 minutes that you can weld at maximum amperage without stopping due to temperature. A 60% duty cycle at 200 A means 6 minutes of welding and 4 minutes of rest. On the data sheet, this is listed as the “duty cycle”—always ask for it.
Actual auxiliary power
The larger number is the maximum; the one that matters is the rated power (6,000 W at Timanfaya). And make sure the 230 V output is separate from the welding output: if they share the same alternator, you can't grind while someone else is welding.
Engine and Air Filter
A portable welder spends its days amid construction dust and straw. The air filter has a greater impact on the engine's lifespan than its displacement. And an engine with readily available replacement parts (the SGB460PRO is also used in the Creta) is an engine that can be repaired.
Start-up and Protections
Electric with a key if you start it twenty times a day; manual if it’s going to sit in a rental warehouse for months. A 30-mA ground fault circuit interrupter and IP67-rated outlets if you work for the government or insure a fleet.
Cables, Wheels, and Who's Responsible

Outdoor Motor, Always
It's a gasoline engine: exhaust fumes must be vented outside enclosed spaces, trenches, and pits. If you're welding inside, the machine stays outside and only the cables are brought in.
Mass near the cord
Place the ground clamp as close as possible to the welding spot and on clean metal. If the ground is too far away or on painted metal, the arc becomes unstable, and you'll blame the machine.
Refuel when the vehicle is cold and stationary
Never use it while the engine is hot or with the arc lit nearby. Gasoline and sparks from the grinder don't mix, and out in the field there's no fire extinguisher on hand unless you bring one: so bring one.
Cables without makeshift splices
Extending welding cables with homemade splices causes the joints to overheat and reduces the actual amperage at the clamp. If you need more length, use cables with the proper gauge and threaded connectors.
Drive slowly between the curbs; do not turn off the engine
Turning the engine off and on every five minutes puts a strain on the battery and the starter motor. Between rows, let it idle; turn it off when the row is finished.
Welding Equipment
A welding helmet with a filter rated for the appropriate amperage, welding gloves, a fire-resistant apron or sleeve, and safety footwear. And at 200 A, hearing protection is essential: the arc and the grinder easily exceed the ear’s tolerance level.
