What Is an Automatic-Start Generator, and Who Is It For?

A generator with an automatic start feature is a device that monitors the power grid and, when it detects a power outage, starts up on its own, supplies power to the system, and shuts down again when power is restored. No one needs to be present, pull a cord, or turn a switch.

The component that makes this possible is the ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch, automatic transfer switch): It determines at any given moment which source is powering the system—the grid or the generator—and prevents the two from overlapping. What exactly happens when the power goes out?

"Start on its own" is easy to say. What sets a good automatic start system apart is what happens in the seconds that follow—and almost no one explains it. This is the actual sequence executed by a generator's control unit Genergy.

Sequence and timers as specified in the Deep Sea DSE7320 control unit manual, which is used in GDS units. In the Mulhacén ATS and in the ATS panels for gasoline generators, the logic is the same, with fewer adjustable parameters. The specific values are set by the installer based on the installation.

Here’s what an automatic startup doesn’t do—so you don’t buy it for something it isn’t. A few seconds pass between the power outage and when power is restored: the time required for the anti-micro-outage delay, the startup, and the switchover. A computer or server will shut down during that interval. If you need zero downtime, the solution is a UPS that covers those seconds and a generator with an ATS to take over. The generator provides the hours; the UPS provides the seconds.

Power ratings from the 2026 catalog. The amperage values in the ATS table are approximate, based on power ranges: the installer determines the correct rating based on the actual service connection. What is an automatic start generator?

It is a generator that starts up automatically when it detects a power outage, supplies power to the system for the duration of the outage, and shuts down automatically when grid power is restored. It is controlled by an automatic transfer switch (ATS), which is either built into the generator or installed separately.

What is an automatic starter generator used for?

So that a home, business, or facility doesn’t have to rely on someone being there to start the generator. Cold storage rooms, alarms, pumps, elevators, farms, or servers: anything that can’t wait for someone to arrive.

How does the automatic start-up of a generator work?

The control panel monitors the grid voltage and frequency. In the event of a failure, it waits a short delay to rule out micro-outages, starts the engine (repeating the attempt if necessary), waits for the voltage to stabilize, and switches the load to the generator. How much does an automatic start generator cost?

It depends on three factors: the power rating, whether the ATS panel is built-in or separate, and whether it’s gasoline or diesel. Do I need an external ATS unit, or is it included?

Only the Mulhacén ATS has it built in. The Creta ATS inverters, the Big Series (Java, Bali, Borneo), and all GDS diesel generators require an external transfer switch, which Genergy It supplies 63 to 630 A, depending on the power rating and the service connection of the installation.

How many seconds does it take for the lights to come back on?

A few seconds: the sum of the anti-microcut delay, the motor startup time, and the transfer time. This margin is intentional, to prevent the motor from starting due to a momentary power flicker. If you need absolute continuity (servers, medical equipment), combine the generator with a UPS that covers those few seconds.

What is the difference between the ATS version and the SOL version?

The ATS activates when the power grid fails. The SOL activates when the inverter in a solar system indicates that the batteries are depleted, and deactivates when they are recharged. Can it start up after a micro-shutdown and keep starting and stopping all day long?

No, as long as it's configured correctly. The control unit applies a network failure detection delay before starting up, and a return delay before feeding power back into the grid. This ensures that a momentary power dip won't cause the generator to start up, and an unstable return won't shut it down prematurely.

How do I know it will work when I need it if it's been sitting idle for months?

Scheduling test starts. The control panel for GDS generators supports up to 16 scheduled starts—weekly or monthly, with or without a load—and three maintenance alarms based on time or date. For gasoline generators, it is recommended to start the generator for 15 minutes each month and not to leave gasoline in the tank for more than a few months.
