What Is a Solar Backup Generator and When Do You Need One?

A photovoltaic system with batteries covers most days, but during a stretch of several cloudy days or periods of high consumption, the batteries run low. The backup generator is the engine-powered backup that the inverter itself starts when this happens: it receives a dry-contact signal when the battery level reaches the low threshold you set, charges the batteries to the high level, and then shuts off. It does not replace the solar system; rather, it supplements it for days when the sun isn’t enough.

It is different from an automatic transfer switch (ATS), which starts up in response to a power outage, not based on battery level; and it is different from a portable power station, which is battery-powered and does not have an engine. How do you choose a backup generator?

For two reasons: what kind of investor you are (if it's Genergy, enter Moncayo or Mulhacén SOL; if it’s another brand, Creta/Java/Bali/Borneo SOL or a GDS) and how much power you need to charge in how much time. The more range you want from the batteries before the generator starts up, the fewer hours of generator use per year, but the more battery capacity you’ll need.

Which generator is compatible with solar panels?

The 23 units on this page are designed for that purpose: they do not generate electricity in parallel with the panels, but rather charge the batteries when solar output is insufficient. You can find the exact compatibility with your inverter in the table above.

Will a backup generator work with any inverter?

16 of the 23 models do, via dry contact: Creta SOL, Java SOL, Bali SOL, Borneo SOL, and the entire GDS family. Moncayo SOL and Mulhacén SOL only work with inverters Genergy, because of its proprietary communication protocol.

What is the difference between a solar backup generator and an automatic transfer switch (ATS)?

The solar backup generator starts up due to a low battery level, as indicated by the inverter. The automatic transfer switch (ATS) starts up due to a power grid failure, detected by a control unit. These are different signals, and, with some exceptions, the generators are designed for each specific situation.

Can a single generator do both?

With the right ATS panel, yes: some models in this line also support a power failure control unit. This is a custom installation; please contact us via the contact form with details about your specific situation.

How long does it take to start up after the inverter alerts you?

Second: The dry contact is a direct signal, with no delay other than the one you program into the inverter itself to prevent startups due to a momentary voltage drop.

Gasoline or diesel for the backup?

Gasoline (SOL series) for residential use, with less frequent starts. Diesel (GDS series) for more continuous use, higher power output, and lower cost per hour in facilities that frequently require backup power: warehouses, farms, and residential communities.

Do I need any special setup to connect it to the inverter?

Your solar installer will handle the wiring for the dry contact signal between the inverter and the generator; the generator itself does not require any additional modifications. Check with your installer to make sure your inverter model has that output.

How many hours a year does a backup generator run?

It depends on how much battery capacity you have and the solar radiation in the area: a properly sized system may only need it during stretches of several consecutive cloudy days—a few dozen hours a year. With less installed battery capacity, it will be needed for more hours.

Does it make a noise when you start it at night?

The noise level is listed in each model's specifications. If the unit starting up at night is a problem in your home, indicate this when setting the threshold: you can adjust the battery level at which it starts up so that it's more likely to do so during the day.

Can I switch from gasoline to diesel later on?

Yes, you can replace the generator while keeping the inverter and batteries, as long as the new model is compatible with your inverter (check the table above). There’s no need to redo the solar installation.

What kind of maintenance does a backup generator require?

The usual maintenance for an internal combustion engine: oil, filter, and starter battery, based on the operating hours specified in the manual. Since the engine runs only a few hours a year, scheduled maintenance (annual inspection) tends to be more important than maintenance based on operating hours.
