What Is an Electric Generator, and Which One Do You Need?

An electric generator—also known as a power generator or electricity generator—converts fuel or stored energy into electricity in places where the power grid does not reach, or when the grid fails. Genergy It has been manufacturing generators since 2007, with a product line ranging from 1,100-watt portable generators to 358-kVA industrial generators.

In Genergy You’ll find four technologies in a single catalog: gasoline engines for everyday use, inverter generators for those who need quiet operation and clean power, diesel generators for continuous operation, and battery-powered stations for situations where combustion or noise is not allowed. You don’t need to know which is which—below, we’ll tell you, based on your situation, which technology is right for you and which product line to choose when buying your electric generator.

Continuous use · industrial

Many hours at a time or leaning against a building

Whether the generator needs to run for 8-, 12-, or 24-hour shifts, or provide automatic power to a warehouse or a residential complex, the technology changes. This is where diesel generator sets come in: engines running at 1,500 rpm designed for continuous operation.

Noise is the problem

Residential development, terrace, or regulated campground

There are places where decibel levels matter more than power output. This is where silent or soundproof generators come in, designed to operate near neighbors or other tents.

No combustion, no noise

No engine, no gas, not a single decibel

Indoors, in a hospital, in a room with children sleeping nearby: to power devices, tools, or small appliances without using fuel, the solution is a portable battery station that can be recharged from the electrical grid or with solar panels.

How to Choose the Right Power Rating for Your Electric Generator

The most common question people ask before buying an electric generator isn't about the technology, but rather how many watts.

And the answer has two parts. The rated power is what the generator delivers continuously. The starting or peak power is what a motor—a refrigerator, a pump, a compressor—requires during the first second, which can be two or three times its normal power consumption. A generator that handles your refrigerator well once it’s running may fall short if it can’t handle the compressor’s peak power when it starts up.

To make sure you don't fall short: add up the wattage of everything you want to use at the same time, identify the appliance with the most power-hungry motor on that list, and add a 25–30% margin to the total to cover its startup.

Power Consumption and Startup Peak of the Most Common Appliances
DeviceApproximate consumptionStart-up peak
LED Lighting (Spotlights)10 – 15 W
Router + TV~150 W
Refrigerator150 – 300 Wx2 – 3 at startup

Microwave1.000 – 1.200 W
Water pump or well pump750 – 1.500 Wx2 – 3 at startup
Small Air Conditioner1.000 – 1.500 Wx3 at startup

Why a Generator? Genergy

1.100 W – 358 kVA

The most comprehensive catalog all in one place: from portable pocket-sized power stations to industrial generators, all under the same brand and with the same after-sales service.

Manufacturer

Genergy It designs and ensures the quality of its generators using its own technical team in Spain; it is not simply an importer that puts its own label on the products.

3-Year Warranty

3 years for individuals and 1 year for businesses across the entire product line. You buy a generator for the day the power goes out: on that day, it matters who’s there to help.

SAT in Spain

In-house technical service and replacement parts throughout the country, without having to rely on an importer or a marketplace to obtain a part.

THD <3 %

Clean power across the entire inverter range: safe power for sensitive electronics, battery chargers, and microprocessor-based equipment.

Since 2007

A Spanish brand with nearly two decades of experience specializing in generators, with a product line that has grown in tandem with its customers' needs.

When You DON'T Need a Generator

We'd rather let you know before you buy something you won't use.

If you just want to charge devices

Cell phone, laptop, a lamp, or a small camping cooler: one battery station is more than enough. It’s quiet, maintenance-free, and doesn’t rely on fuel. See the “No Combustion, No Noise” section above.

If you need a continuous supply

For a home or business that can never be without power, the fundamental solution is the power grid or a permanent installation—not a portable generator that needs to be refueled, monitored, and maintained. A generator is a backup, not a replacement for the grid.

The one that combines an electric start, a large fuel tank, and—if you won't be home—automatic restart in the event of a power outage. That's what the Cube lineup offers, with its ATS and SOL models. See Cube home generators →

Is it legal to have a generator at home?

Yes. It must always be used outdoors in a well-ventilated area, in compliance with your municipality’s noise ordinance, and if it is connected to the home’s electrical panel, it must be installed by an electrician using a switch or an ATS panel—never plugged directly into a household outlet.

What kind of electric generator do I need for a house?

For home backup, a gasoline generator from the Cube line; if noise is an issue in your neighborhood, a quiet inverter; and if you already have solar panels, the SOL version. See generators at Cube →

What is the difference between a generator and a generator set?

In everyday use, “generator” refers to lightweight gasoline or inverter-based units, while “power generator set” refers to higher-powered diesel units designed for continuous operation, although technically both are machines that generate electricity. We explain this in detail in the article “The Difference Between a Generator and a Power Generator Set.”

How much power does an electric generator consume?

It depends on the power output, load, and technology: between 0.3 and 2 liters per hour for gasoline or diesel models, and no fuel consumption for battery-powered models. Complete guide: How much fuel do gasoline and diesel generators consume?

I recently purchased a Limited 7000 generator. I contacted the company by email to ask a few questions, and they responded immediately. Plus, they’re going to replace the industrial outlet adapter in a couple of days. GREAT AFTER-SALES SERVICE—for once, what they say is true; that’s what I call service. As for the generator, it looks well-made and high-quality, starts right up, and the noise level is pretty standard for a gasoline-powered generator—it’s a good machine. For now, I’m giving Genergy 5 stars.

I bought the 3000 diesel generator; they tested it at the factory before shipping it to me, and they delivered it with oil already in it and ready to use—even though they didn’t have to, since at the big retailers, they don’t even bother to open the box for you to see it. Once tested, it works very well, and I have no complaints. The customer service is excellent. I called several times to get more information—and, by the way, to make sure it wasn’t one of those scams that are so common in online sales these days—and I can assure you that this is a trustworthy company from which I’ll make future purchases. Thank you very much for everything.

Definitely a trustworthy company. I had a minor issue with a generator, and they resolved it within 24 hours. They responded to my email incredibly quickly and provided a solution that was fast, effective, and on par with what you’d expect from a mature, well-established team. Their service was direct, transparent, and straightforward—no evasiveness or automated responses that lead nowhere. By the way, the generator is a Genergy 5000, and it works like a charm—well-designed, compact, and reliable. I use it almost exclusively to power a 1.5 HP well pump. It’s definitely a great choice, and I highly recommend it.
